Insurance companies use details called rating factors to calculate your premium—and understanding them can help you shop smarter.
California requires these mandatory factors, in this order of importance:

Depending on their approved rating plans, insurers may also consider:

Driving less? Changed jobs or vehicles? Ask for a review using your current, accurate information. When comparing quotes, match the coverage limits and deductibles so you can see the real difference.
California requires insurers to give the greatest importance to your driving record, followed by annual mileage and years of driving experience.
Insurers use their own approved rating plans. The same driver and vehicle can receive different prices, so compare quotes with matching coverage limits and deductibles.
Annual mileage is a mandatory rating factor. If you now drive less, ask for a review using an accurate estimate; your insurer’s approved rating plan determines the price.
No automatic new discount applies from the proposal alone. As of September 18, 2026, removing marital status as a rating factor is a proposed change.
